SONET

Service Description:

SONET stands for Synchronous Optical Networking, and it allows different rates of data streams to be multiplexed over optical fiber. SONET handles large amounts of data and voice traffic and now replaces PDH. It is widely used in both the United States and Canada.

The reason for its popularity is that SONET is extremely fast and efficient. SONET rings define the topology a carrier deploys to its network to make sure outages do not cause a traffic loss. In a SONET ring, if data hits and outage, it reroutes itself around the ring in 50 to 100 milliseconds.

SONET also allows carriers to integrate their existing digital carrier with optical fiber systems.

The chief SONET signal operates at 51.840 Mbps, and is named STS-1 (Synchronous Transport Signal one). SONET is now a standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which is an organization that creates the computer industry’s standards.
